DUTIES:
The LPN will be an integral member of the Acute Inpatient Psychiatry Team, responsible to the Nurse Manager while also working under the direct supervision of a Registered Nurse for provision of care to patients on the inpatient mental health unit. He/she demonstrates independent technical judgment with minimal supervision, as well as maintains a comprehensive and thorough working knowledge of the most complex and difficult practices and procedures. Possesses the ability to observe more subtle physical and emotional changes in patients and demonstrates taking appropriate action(s) based on those observations. Accurately and thoroughly documents observations, care delivered and the patient's response to care that could require immediate modification of the patient's care plan. The LPN seeks assistance and guidance by informing RN or MD of changes in patient's condition requiring higher-level intervention. He/she possesses the ability to proactively assist the RN or MD in addressing patient's needs for medication/treatments; accurately administer prescribed medications/treatments according to established policies/procedures; and appropriately records administration and patient's response to medications/treatments received. Demonstrates the ability to use the computerized documentation systems (BCMA, CPRS, VISTA) at VAPSHCS.

QUALIFICATIONS REQUIRED:
BASIC REQUIREMENTS:
U.S. citizenship.

Graduate of practical or vocational nursing approved by the appropriate State accrediting agency and/or the National League for Nursing at the time the program was completed by the applicant. Health care education in the military service or training in the military service which is accepted by the licensing body in the jurisdiction in which the individual is licensed as qualifying for full LPN/LVN licensure will be accepted as meeting the education requirements for VHA employment.

Full, active current and unrestricted LPN/LVN licensure in a State, Territory or Commonwealth (i.e., Puerto Rico) of the United States, or in the District of Columbia.

GRADE DETERMINATIONS:
Applicants must meet the minimum qualifications as stated in VA Handbook 5005, Part II, Appendix G13, dated 4/15/2002. In addition to the basic requirements applicants must meet the specialized experience requirements as follows:

GS 4: (a) Completion of at least 6 months of qualifying experience at the GS-3 level or equivalent. Applicants perform at the advanced beginner level. They are responsible for direct patient care activities under the supervisor of a Registered Nurse (RN).

GS 5: (a) Completion of at least 1 year of qualifying experience at the GS-4 level or equivalent. Applicants must demonstrate knowledge and ability to provide a full range of practical nursing care to patients with a variety of physical and/or behavioral problems; demonstrated ability to serve as a responsible member of the nursing team and interact with patients, family members, professional and supportive personnel who provide patient care, and with members of other services.

GS-6: Completion of at least one year of qualifying experience at the GS-5 level or equivalent. knowledge and skills necessary for concentrated effort and self-direction in Applicants must demonstrate the carrying out the most complex practical nursing care assignments, including assignments for selected acute care, long-term or ambulatory care, or psychiatric patients requiring skilled nursing care; demonstrate their participation as a member of a health care team with these selected patients and providing care to them on a regular and recurring basis; completing assigned duties and responsibilities which involve performing nonstandard and specialized practical nursing activities at the GS-6 level, requiring broad work experience and demonstrated skill sufficient to resolve a range of nursing problems.

The full performance level of this vacancy is GS-06. The actual grade at which an applicate may be selected for this position is GS 3 - GS 6. The Professional Standards Board (a peer-review group) will review the selected candidate's qualifications and recommend the grade and step at which the candidate will be placed. The salary is based on the grade and step for the selected candidate.
