The Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences currently has an outstanding opportunity for a Research Scientist 3 . This individual will be an essential contributor to multiple, large and innovative multi-site studies funded through the National Institute of Health (NIH) and the Department of Defense (DoD). The goal of this position is to design the aims and research methods of the different projects and create efficient and effective strategies to synchronize and complete them on time and within budget. In order to anticipate and address the design issues that arise in multi-site trials, this position requires a doctoral degree and the ability to understand the research methodology issues as well as ethics involved in psychology and health services research. In addition, this position requires experience organizing research studies as well as an ability to work positively and effectively with many collaborators at the University of Washin! gton as well as other universities, the Army and Marine Corps, the Veterans administration, and other non-academic research organizations.
The research studies managed by this Research Scientist position are directed by Dr. Kate Comtois and Dr. David Atkins. Current studies include two large randomized clinical trials of innovative suicide prevention interventions with active duty
Soldiers and Marines at four installations, new psychotherapy applications of text-mining and speech signal processing research, quality assurance research on dialectical behavior therapy (DBT), and smaller studies of psychotherapy training and implementation.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Research Activities:
- Co-authorship and design with the PI of the research aims and methodologies on multiple projects. Create efficient and effective strategies to synchronize and complete them on time and within budget.
- Review study data and perf! orm qualitative and quantitative data analysis using Excel and statisti! cal software. Follow multi-site data closely to anticipate and address design issues that arise.
- Prepare data for presentation and provide regular status reports to the Principal Investigators on progress of the research study.
- Contributes to study publications including co-authoring papers and presentations.
- Co-authorship and design with the PI of human subjects protocols across all studies including submissions, status reports, and modifications to the Institutional Review Boards (IRBs) at the University of Washington, two Army installations, and the VA as well as the Human Research Protection offices of the Army and Navy and multiple Data Safety Monitoring Boards (DSMBs)
- Organization and co-authorship with the PI of all grant reports and coordination with funders for all studies.
- Provide regular progress reports to the Principal Investigators on status of deadlines and request assista! nce when needed to assure tasks are manageable and completed.
- Oversee and coordinate research meetings to assure positive and effective communication between team members and on-time completion of tasks.
- Create, monitor, and implement plans to achieve research project deadlines.
- Supervises the work of research support staff and mentors junior staff in research as well as administrative skills.
- Oversee budgets, travel, and purchasing across studies.
- Perform related duties as required.
REQUIREMENTS:
PhD or other doctoral degree in Psychology or related health services field, plus at least three years related work experience.
- Understanding all aspects of research des! ign and methods for each study
- Understands the clinical and et! hical issues of psychotherapy research
- Very strong organizational abilities and experience in team focused work using technology to bridge physical distance between collaborators
- Ability to complete assigned work under general guidance with assistance furnished on unusual problems.
- Attention to procedural detail and meticulous record-keeping is required
- Requires excellent written and verbal skills and the ability to work in a dynamic, complex team environment
