The University of Washington and the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) Puget Sound Health Care System maintains a partnership conducting world class biomedical research.

The Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences has an outstanding opportunity for a part time 50%FTE Research Coordinator. This position will support various studies and investigators in this research partnership. The position is located primarily at the VA. This position will interact with a multidisciplinary group of basic and clinical investigators, including neurologists, psychiatrists, neuropsychologists, cell and molecular neurobiologists, neuropathologists, geneticists, biostati! cians, geriatricians, and others. These researchers work with ! fellows, volunteer research participants, community partners, and scientific collaborators.

Research areas include investigation of basic mechanisms causing the development of Alzheimer’s disease and related disorders. They also direct particular attention to biomarkers, experimental new treatments, and studies that search for genetic risk factors underlying Alzheimer’s disease.

The VA Veterans Integrated Service Network (VISN) 20 Northwest's Mental Illness Research, Education and Clinical Center (MIRECC) develops novel and improved treatments for major behavioral disorders afflicting veterans. The Northwest MIRECC has directed major resources to:

Neuropsychiatric disorders highly prevalent among combat-exposed Operation Enduring Freedom / Operation Iraqi Freedom / Operation New Dawn returnees:

  • Posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD),
  • Blast concussive mild traumatic brain injury (mTBI), and
  • Collaborations in re! search, education, .and treatment efforts between the MIRECC and Department of Defense components locally and nationally.
This purpose of this position is to provide assistance and support of daily operations for a large research group (over 25 faculty Investigators and associated clinical research staff) in the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences across all research sites. Investigators are currently located at University of Washington Medical Center, Harborview Medical Center, VA Puget Sound Health Care System, and Madigan Army Medical Center.

  • Assist with research involving human subjects, specifically policies and regulations.
  • Prepare regulatory materials to center faculty, staff and students including preparation of applications for research proposals involving human subjects.
This position requires demonstrated ability to interpret and apply research practices and protocols; demonstrated writing ability; com! munication with center investigators and staff. Proficiency in standard! office programs (Word, Excel) and database software (Filemaker Pro) are required.

Duties and Responsibilities:
Development and preparation (in conjunction with Principal Investigators) of clinical protocols and associated clinical documents that include content prescribed by pertinent regulatory and local agencies such as Office of Human Research Protection [OHRP], Department of Veterans Affairs [DVA], Department of Defense [DoD], National Institutes of Health [NIH], and local VA Puget Sound and University of Washington Institutional Review Boards [IRB]s and VA Research and Development Committee[R&DC], all VA subcommittees, and UW subcommittees.

Correspondence, preparation and submissions of modifications to research protocols; reporting of adverse events, serious adverse events according to institutional policy; and renewals to appropriate IRBs, VA Research & Development Committee and all relevant subcommittees.

Preparation and submis! sion of applications (including informed consent forms, HIPAA authorization forms and/or requests for appropriate waivers of informed consent/HIPAA authorization) to appropriate IRBs including: University of Washington, VA Puget Sound, Madigan Army Medical Center and VA Central IRB.

Drafting and editing of grants and publications. Ensures compliance with National Institutes of Health public access policies for publications.

Preparation and submission of applications to the VA Research & Development Committee including relevant subcommittees (Radiation Safety, Biohazard, Privacy, Information Security).

Implementation of strategies that facilitate the progress of clinical research projects through the regulatory process, including maintenance and troubleshooting or tracking databases. Assist in program evaluation.

Tracking staff training and compliance

Support of other academic and educational activities.

REQUIREME! NTS:
Bachelor's Degree in Psychology, Public Health, English or related field and at least two years of clinical research related experience.

DESIRED:
Experience with records management including knowledge of federal records management practices, National Archives and Records Administration (NARA) policies, and Veterans Health Administration (VHA) Records Control Schedule.

! Condition of Employment:
Packing and lifting of boxes containing paper records is required.
