The Mental Health Service at VA Puget Sound Health Care System (VAPSHCS) is recruiting for physicians to work at various locations ! (Seattle Division, Tacoma Division, and Community Based Outpatient Clinics such as but not limited to Bremerton, Mt. Vernon, Port Angeles, Chehalis, Bellevue, Lake City, and Federal Way). Physicians may provide care to Veterans in various specialty areas, including Inpatient and Acute Care Services, Psychiatric Emergency Services, Domiciliary, Substance Use Disorders, Primary Care Mental Health Integration program, and Outpatient Mental Health Clinic, treating veterans with PTSD and a wide range of other mental health disorders. Services will be provided through various treatment modalities, such as in-person visits (individual, group, medication groups, etc.), video teleconferencing technology to distance clinic sites and/or to Veterans in their homes, telephone visits, secure email messaging, and other telemental health technologies. The physician will be Board Certified or Board Eligible in psychiatry and should be highly skilled in the evaluation and treatment of patien! ts with a broad range of behavioral health problems. Extended ! hours, Saturday hours and inpatient on-call rotations may be required. In addition, telecommuting is an option for physicians providing telemental health services. MHS utilizes a multi-disciplinary team centered model of patient care to deliver biopsychosocial treatment for Veterans, and MHS physicians will function as core members of these treatment teams. The physician will need to be able to work effectively with other disciplines and have strong communication and/or team building skills. The physician will engage in leadership and quality improvement activities supporting the function of medical services in the inpatient and/or outpatient arenas. In addition to clinical work, the physician will have assigned administrative and professional responsibilities to support the overall mission of the Mental Health Service, VA PSHCS, and the Veterans Administration. The VA Puget Sound Health Care System enjoys a strong affiliation with the University of Washington School of Med! icine, with the Seattle Division being its primary training site for psychiatry. Both the American Lake (Tacoma) and Seattle Divisions have robust multidisciplinary training programs, ongoing research activities, and regular opportunities for ongoing education and professional development. If the physician has appropriate qualifications and a faculty appointment in the Department of Psychiatry, they may be involved in the teaching program for residents and other trainees. There may also be opportunities for research in collaboration with the Mental Illness Research, Education, and Clinical Center (MIRECC), the Center for Excellence in Substance Abuse Treatment and Evaluation (CESATE), as well as a number of other programs across all sites of care. Patient care activities may include but are not limited to: 1. Conducting appropriate history, physical evaluations, and mental status examinations on assigned patients. 2. Completing intake assessments and developing diagnostic f! ormulations, in accordance with the latest version of the Diagnostic an! d Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders. 3. Developing treatment plans (in coordination with the multidisciplinary treatment team when appropriate). 4. Ordering, monitoring, and responding to all necessary laboratory and radiological assessments. 5. Initiating consults and referrals as indicated. 6. Pharmacotherapy and psychotherapy as indicated for assigned patients. 7. Coordination of overall mental health care for patients for whom they are the assigned Principle Mental Health Provider. 8. Consultation to other providers about clinical issues with their patients. 9. Management of patients in crisis. 10. Completing all appropriate clinical reminders. 11. ECT (Seattle Division only; dependent upon appropriate clinical privileges). 12. Triage and admitting to inpatient psychiatric wards. 13. Provide outpatient psychiatric services to Veterans at remote sites utilizing real time video conferencing technology. 14) Evening and weekend on call coverage as assigned, including: ! (a) American Lake Division: Rotating evening and weekend on-call coverage (phone consultation/virtual care coordination) for the Mental Health Residential Rehabilitation and Recovery Treatment Program. Primarily responsible for phone consultation to RN staff, and (in cases of medical transfers) may consult with community ER. This coverage requires the physician to have remote access to patient records; however, does not require the physician to come to the medical center during off hours. (b) Seattle Division: Consultation with Psychiatric Emergency Services (PES) social workers and supervision of on-call psychiatry residents who are working in the emergency room and admitting patients to the ward. Weekend and holiday call will be required several times a year in terms of evaluating all admissions on those days.
