The Department of Psychiatry & Behavioral Sciences currently has an outstanding opportunity for a Research Coordinator . This individual will implement and administer multiple large scale research projects, sponsored by the Department of Defense, coordinate a biennial conference, and direct smaller ongoing studies conducted by the lab.
One DoD project is a randomized controlled trial in collaboration multiple institutions and Ft. Stewart, Georgia (FSGA) to implement and determine the effectiveness of novel therapeutic framework specifically designed to reduce suicidal ideation and behavior in 300 Soldiers admitted to a behavioral health provider following a suicide attempt or severe suicidal ideation.
The other DoD project is a randomized controlled trial in collaboration with multiple institutions and military bases across the country to determine whether the addition of a caring text message intervention results in reductions in suicidal ideation and behavior over the year following identification of suicide ideation or behavior in 800 Service Members.
The conference is the Seattle Implementation Research Conference (SIRC) which is sponsored by an NIMH R13 grant and in kind UW support. This conference focuses on the research methods key to implementation research projects and involves symposia and a coordinated feedback session on projects in process. Between conferences, SIRC oversees a website coordinating people, research measures, and research articles on the topic.
Smaller studies include the data analysis of previous studies and ongoing quality improvement research with the Harborview Psychotherapy Clinic functioning to improve care and provide pilot data for future studies.
The Research Coordinator is constantly required to integrate information from multiple sources to ensure that research projects meet or exceed the requirements of the University of Washington, collaborating universities and institutions, the Department of Defense, the National Institutes of Health and other funders. Competitive candidates will be attentive to detail, highly motivated, and able to multi-task, take direction from more than one person, and communicate effectively with a diverse group of people.
Collaborate on the design of the studies and assume overall responsibility for supervision of the day to day operations, including hiring and management of study staff, and reporting and correspondence with all collaborators, bases, sponsors, and other stakeholders.
Duties include assigning tasks and managing daily work flow of all study staff to meet target aims of each study on specific study timelines. Projection of rates of achieving study aims and preparation of reports on data collected in order to make decisions on project timelines, lab staffing and responsibilities with Dr. Comtois. Supervise staff in the implementation of research projects and collection and maintenance of data. Act as primary liaison with the central department in initiating personnel processes; grant accounting practices, payroll management and budgeting. Collaborate with PI on innovating new research projects, approaches, methods and techniques to be developed into manuscripts, abstracts, trainings, future grants or within current projects. Maintain existing human subjects IRB applications for multiple IRBs nationwide as protocol changes occur. Responding to any protocol deviations or patient incidents (e.g., suicide attempts) for any study and reporting to IRB. Coordinate the Data Safety Monitoring Board (DSMB) for one study. Assess suicide risk and respond to patient crisis in emergency situations

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Oversee suicide risk management of 800 suicidal active duty Soldiers and Marine study participants via direct supervision of clinician-assessors at three large military installations as well as of 2-5 phone assessors based at UW. Coordinate with PI and military clinical staff on appropriate response and disposition of Service Members at risk.
- Coordinate multi-site protocol implementation and oversee recruitment. Develop recruitment and retention strategies.
- Collaborate effectively with clinicians conducting study interventions or working in clinics from which study participants are recruited. Assure study procedures are followed correctly and problem-solve where study procedures create clinic difficulties. Maintain regular communication with clinic personnel.
- Collaborate on the design and development of the direct-entry computer assessments. Supervise outcome assessments and be responsible for all data management and integrity associated with the studies. Design protocols for cleaning and coding the data.
- Coordinate a behavioral health research biennial conference of 200 participants including coordination of calls for proposals and their selection, speaker preparation, registration of participants, travel arrangement and reimbursement, preparation of materials, and coordination with venue and catering.
- Oversee multiple websites including for the research conference, the clinical trials, and the research lab. Work with web developer on updates, keep content current, and coordinate with colleagues maintaining page content, and related social networking accounts.
- Coordinate a strategic planning group of expert and junior researchers as well as clinical experts on implementation of evidence based practices. Maintain mailing lists, conduct periodic surveys, monitor email traffic, and facilitate connections between collaborators.
- Participate in the analysis of data, interpretation of results, and generation of manuscripts resulting from the projects.
- Prepare and manage human subject applications, modifications, and status reports. Prepare progress reports and act as the liaison between the project team and the sponsors or other stakeholders.
- Monitor the budgets, contracts, and other financial matters related to the grants and projects.
- Provide assurance of adherence to study policies and procedures. Participate in weekly supervision meetings, conduct regular site visits, and complete other administrative tasks as needed.
Requirements:
Bachelorâs degree in psychology, medicine or related field, plus 2 years of experience managing an academic research project.
Equivalent education/experience will substitute for all minimum qualifications except when there are legal requirements, such as a license/certification/registration.
Desired:
- Training and expertise in administering psychiatric structured interviews.
- Experience working within inpatient and outpatient medical settings.
- Experience working with individuals who have Borderline Personality Disorder, are suicidal or have suicidal ideation, or who have endorsed substance use.
- Experience training and directing the work of assigned staff.
- Experienced in cleaning, coding, and managing research data.
- Experienced with UW Human Subjects processes and procedures.
- Experienced with Data Safety Monitoring Board (DSMB) processes and procedures.
- Training in Human Subjects and HIPAA Compliance protocols.
A satisfactory outcome from a criminal background verification may be required prior to hire.
