There is currently one full-time, overtime-eligible Campus Police Sergeant position available on the Olympia Campus of The Evergreen State College.

This recruitment is for applicants who are currently certified as a peace officer in the State of Washington as outlined in RCW 43.101.095 , or eligible to meet the minimum standard for certification as set forth in RCW 43.101.200 .

COMPENSATION

Salary is $3,918 - $5,266 per month of full time work.

Experience and training may be considered in salary placement.

POLICE SERVICES MISSION STATEMENT

“A partnership based on mutual trust and understanding, between the members of the Evergreen community and the department of Police Services, sharing the responsibility of providing a safe learning and working environment through community awareness, involvement and education.”

POSITION PURPOSE

Supervise and train a shift or squad of campus police officers and/or civilian staff. Provide guidance and assistance to campus police officers and civilian staff in accomplishing the goals and objectives of the departm! ent. Perform patrol duties of a campus police officer. Act as a liaison! with the public and with other government agencies and police departments.

Incumbents have arrest powers and are required to be commissioned law officers under the regulations of the state. Due to the nature of police work, working conditions are unpredictable and contain an element of personal danger. This position reports to the Director of Police Services.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

Provide supervision, direction, recognition, training and feedback to shift of campus police officers and/or civilian employees, with particular attention paid to the employee’s care and handling of equipment, manner of responding to and interacting with the campus community and the public, as well as the employee’s judgment, initiative, and behavior. Maintain work and leave schedules. Facilitate periodic meetings with personnel and submit written reports of each meeting to the Chief. Write reports covering activity of squad or shift assigned.

Provide materia! ls, equipment, and counseling and ensure timely dissemination of information to officers and others in accomplishing the mission, goals, and strategic plan of Police Services.

Supervise and coordinate the investigation of criminal cases, offering guidance and expertise to campus police officers, and ensuring that procedures are conducted in accordance with laws, regulations, institution and department policies, and standard operating procedures.

Inform staff of changes in regulations and policies, implications of new or amended laws, and new techniques of police work; explain police operations to staff to assist them with performing their duties.

Monitor and evaluate performance of subordinates in accordance with established guidelines to determine training requirement and deficiencies.

Provide training and instruction on a variety of enforcement techniques and problems; assist in the development and conduct training programs for campus p! olice and staff.

Patrol campus buildings and grounds on foot, ! bicycle, or by vehicle to maintain security; investigate complaints of disturbance, accidents, stolen property, or criminal activity.

Investigate and resolve personnel problems within department, and charges of alleged misconduct against staff.

Monitor vehicles, enforcement activity, collision and other investigative reports and case files for timely submission, accuracy and completeness; review and correct reports of subordinate officers.

Assist Director with developing, revising, and implementing departmental policies and procedures.

Informs Director of situations and incidents that may be of concern to the agency and college.

Prepare correspondence on behalf of Director for public and other agencies.

Provide information on police services to local groups and others requesting information on our agency.

Perform other assigned or requested duties as required.

Knowledge of and ability to use specialized police equipment, techniques and instruments, including firearms.

Knowledge of basic budgetary principles and the ability to understanding cost issues surrounding purchasing equipment, staff overtime, training requests, etc.

Skill and ability to know when to assume command, recognize dangerous and stressful situations, and when to take proper corrective action.

Ability to maintain a degree of fitness that allows participation in stressful, physically demanding, and/or confrontational situations.

Skill and ab! ility to establish and maintain effective working relationships with diverse constituents (i.e., students and other campus community members, the public, law enforcement officials and other employees).

Skill and ability to use general office equipment, including computers and related software.

PERFORMANCE EXPECTATIONS

Accountable for regularly supervising and evaluating staff and ensuring that campus police officer/law enforcement duties are effectively carried out in accordance with applicable state and federal laws and with department guidelines and standard operating procedures.

Commitment to and support of the department strategic plan, mission, goals and objectives.

Commitment to and facilitate practice of Community Oriented Policing (COP’s) philosophy as a way of doing business in Police Services.

Maintain proficiency or expertise in federal and state, institution and department policies, rules and regulations.
Perform patrol and police office duties in accordance with prof! essional standards and in compliance with Police Services standard operating procedures.

CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT

Be currently certified as a peace office in the State of Washington as outline in RCW 43.101.095, or eligible to meet the minimum standard for certification as set forth in RCW 43.101.200.

Possession of a valid driver’s license.

Have no felony convictions.

Submit to a background and reference check.

If extended a conditional offer of employment, submit to and successfully pass a polygraph test, psychological evaluation, and medical examination.

Have the ability to work day, evening and graveyard shifts, weekends, holidays and during emergency situations, and overtime as needed.

Provide proof of identity and employment eligibility within three days of beginning work.

This position is assigned to part of the college that is covered by a union shop provision and a collective bargaini! ng agreement. Employees are required to pay an amount equal to the fees or dues required to be a member of the union to the Washington Federation of State Employees within thirty days of their date of hire.

PHASE II

The College scores the Key Skills and Abilities Inventory for each complete application.

The names of the applicants who successfully pass the Key Skills and Abilities Inventory will have their name plac! ed on the applicant pool list for Campus Police Sergeant.

Up t! o twenty-five applicants and all scores ties from the applicant pool list will be placed on a certification list for further consideration by the appointing/hiring authority and search committee.

The applicants who are placed on the certification list will be mailed a Statement of Personal History Form and Background Check Waiver Form. The Background Check waiver form must be signed by the applicant and notarized by a certified Notary Public. Candidates may contact Human Resource Services for a list of college employees who are Notaries Public. Applicants will be given approximately 2 weeks to complete and return the forms. All forms/information must be received in Human Resource Services by the specified return date. Applicants on the certification list who fail to return the completed Statement of Personal History Form and a Background Check Waiver Form by the specified date may not be considered further for the current position; however, their name will be retur! ned to the applicant pool list for possible future consideration.

PHASE III

Finalist candidates are invited to participate in phone and/or on-campus interviews. The on-campus interviews may include the following:

Interview with the search committee.

One-on-one interview with the Director of Police Services.

One-on-one interview with the Vice President for Student Affairs.

A campus community forum.

Please note that the search committee may choose to interview all certified applicants who have successfully advanced to this phase of the selection process; however, having your name certified does not guarantee an interview.

PHASE IV

Reference checks conducted on select group of interviewed candidates.

One applicant from the reference check process will be extended a conditional offer of employment. The conditional offer of employment is contingent upon successfully completing a background ! check, polygraph test (conducted by an experienced polygrapher selected! by The Evergreen State College), psychological evaluation (administered by a psychiatrist or psychologist selected by The Evergreen State College and licensed by the State of Washington), and medical examination (administered by a medical provider selected by The Evergreen State College).

PHASE V

Polygraph test, psychological evaluation, and medical examination conducted.

PHASE VI

Final job offer extended.
