The University of Washington Alzheimer's Disease Research Center (ADRC) is a complex enterprise in partnership between the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences at UW and the Veterans’ Administration Puget Sound Health Care System. It is located primarily at the VA.

Members of ADRC investigate the basic mechanisms causing the development of Alzheimer’s disease and related disorders. They also direct particular attention to biomarkers, experimental new treatments, and studies that search for genetic risk factors underlying Alzheimer's disease. Main priorities are to find the causes of Alzheimer’s and to identify effective treatments and prevention strategies for this tragic disorder. The ultimate goal of both basic and clinical studies is to improve patient care and functio! ning, as well as to improve the quality of life for both patients and caregivers.

The UW ADRC creates a culture that helps researchers attain new knowledge about Alzheimer’s and related dementias and then helps them apply this knowledge to the development of innovative therapies. This goal is achieved by gathering a multidisciplinary group of basic and clinical investigators, including neurologists, psychiatrists, neuropsychologists, cell and molecular neurobiologists, neuropathologists, geneticists, biostatisticians, geriatricians, and others. These ADRC researchers work with fellows, volunteer research participants, community partners, and scientific collaborators locally, nationally, and internationally. Our investigators also partner with other Alzheimer’s centers across the country to evaluate promising new medications and other treatments for Alzheimer’s.

Through these endeavors, the ADRC continues its education and training mission to! develop the careers of new Alzheimer’s investigators and to enhan! ce the knowledge of health care professionals and lay caregivers. The UW ADRC currently has an outstanding opportunity for a Program Operations Analyst to coordinate the operations of the NW Mental Illness Research Education and Clinical Center (MIRECC). This individual will serve as the expert on regulatory standards and expectations and the compliance officer within Research, specifically the Behavioral Neurosciences Group. This position develops and implements a systematic approach to ensure a high level of awareness of and adherence to regulatory compliance including ramifications of failures in compliance.

Research areas include Aging and associated studies (Alzheimer’s, Dementia-related studies), Posttraumatic Stress Disorder Studies, Mild Traumatic Brain Injury studies. The Northwest MIRECC applies modern genetic, neurobiologic and clinical trial methodology to the discovery and development of new and more effective treatments for major and often treatm! ent resistant mental disorders afflicting veterans and the active duty combat personnel who will become veterans. DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: • Development and preparation (in conjunction with Principal Investigators), of clinical protocols and associated clinical documents that include content prescribed by pertinent regulatory and local agencies (Office of Human Research Protection [OHRP], Department of Veterans Affairs [DVA], Department of Defense [DoD], Food and Drug Administration [FDA], National Institutes of Health [NIH], and local VA Puget Sound and University of Washington Institutional Review Boards [IRB]s and VA Research and Development Committee [R&DC], all VA subcommittees. • Preparation and submission of applications (including informed consent forms, HIPAA authorization forms and/or requests for appropriate waivers of informed consent/HIPAA authorization) to appropriate Institutional Review Boards (IRBs), including: o University of Washington o VA ! Puget Sound o Madigan Army Medical Center o VA Central IRB • Ensur! ing that all Investigators and research staff maintain compliance with Good Clinical Practices, Military Treatment Facility (MTF), VA, and academic affiliate IRB policies for the proper conduct of clinical studies and the protection of human subjects, including training and supervision of clinical research staff on the ethical conduct of research involving human subjects.

• Preparation and submission of applications to the VA Research and Development Committee (R&DC) including relevant subcommittees (Radiaton Safety, Biohazard, Privacy, Information Security). • Continued correspondence, preparation and submissions of modifications to research protocols; reporting of Adverse events (AEs) and Serious Adverse Events (SAEs) according to institutional policy; and renewals appropriate IRBs, VA R&DC, and all relevant subcommittees. • Implementation of strategies that facilitate the progress of clinical research projects through the regulatory process, inclu! ding maintenance and troubleshooting of tracking databases; analysis of IRB practices and procedures; and assistance in program development, implementation, and evaluation. • Advising investigators and clinical research staff conducting research involving human subjects on pertinent agency policies and regulations (OHRP, FDA, NIH, VA, DoD), as well as current bioethics issues.

• Assistance with preparation of grant application materials to ensure that they contain required elements regarding protection of human subjects and ethical conduct of research. • Provision of regulatory, ethical, and methodological advice to individual center faculty, staff, and students in preparation of applications and consent documents for research proposals involving human subjects. • Support of other divisional academic and educational activities (including but not limited to): o Preparation and submission of manuscripts to medical journals (includes Endnote format! ting, uploading of manuscript parts and associated files, preparation o! f revisions etc.) o Pre award grant support for faculty (organizes parts of the grant applications, collects biosketch information, and coordinates team members to meet goals and timelines, editorial grant support) o Assistance in the submission of abstracts to national and international meetings, and creation of posters presented at national and international meetings. Equivalent education/experience will substitute for all minimum qualifications except when there are legal requirements, such as a license/certification/registration.
