This recruitment is being conducted as an Open/Promotional recruitment. Current regular full-time City of Stockton employees may apply for this position as a promotional opportunity, and successful candidates will be placed on a promotional list. All other candidates may apply for this position as an open competitive opportunity, and successful candidates will be placed on an open list. The appointing authority will have the option of requesting names from the promotional list, the open list, or a combination of both. This list may be used to fill future full-time vacancies.

TYPING CERTIFICATE REQUIRED - DUE by AUGUST 31, 2023 BY 5:30PM

Circulation Assistant I is the entry-level class in this library patron service support series. Initially under close supervision, incumbents perform the more routine duties while learning City policies and procedures and becoming familiar with library systems and practices. This class is alternately staffed with Circulation Assistant II, and incumbents advance to the higher class after successfully completing a one-year probationary period and demonstrating proficiency which meets the qualifications for the higher level class.
- Sets up circulation desk for daily activities; turns on terminal, pulls unclaimed reserves, prepares cash drawer and desk supplies.
- Checks library books and materials in and out utilizing a computerized system; empties book drops.
- Registers and issues library cards to patrons; checks patron status to verify registration information; explains library circulation policies and procedures.
- Calculates and collects fines and other charges for overdue, lost or damaged books; records and balances daily receipts.
- Assists library paraprofessional and professional staff, and refers difficult or unusual problems to appropriate supervisory or professional staff members.
- Responds to basic patron requests for directional information and materials and refers questions of a more technical or reference nature to appropriate staff members.
- Contacts patrons regarding; returned mail/address verifications; receives, verifies and releases materials for online reserve requests.
- Performs general clerical and typing work; unpacks and sorts daily book shipments and distributes as indicated.
- Receives returned books and materials, and examines items for damage; sorts returned materials for return to local shelves or for shipment to other library locations.
- Operates computer terminal and other standard and library office equipment.
- Prepares a variety of periodic and special library processing and activities reports for supervisory review.
- Maintains records and files related to library services activities and projects, including interlibrary loan.
- Assists in a variety of assigned special projects and services.
- Receives, claims, and inventories periodicals, subscriptions/serial publications.
- Maintains and orders supplies for the library system as well as the section.
Education/Experience:
Possession of a high school diploma or GED.
Other Requirements:
- Must possess a valid (two years old or less) typing certificate for a least 40 NET words per minute.
- Must be willing to work evenings and weekends.
- Must possess the physical characteristics to perform the critical and important duties of the job, including walking, reaching above head, bending to floor level, standing continuously without a break for two-hour periods, and lifting and carrying 30 pounds.
Knowledge of :
- General municipal library services, organization and functions;
- Basic public desk etiquette and customer service skills and methods of providing information;
- Basic business arithmetic;
- Basic office practices and procedures; and
- Use of standard office equipment, including the use of computerized equipment.
- Following oral and written directions;
- Dealing tactfully and effectively with a variety of individuals, including patrons, library staff and the general public;
- Making accurate arithmetic computations to determine library overdue fees, cash balances and related tasks;
- Making sound judgments and decisions within established guidelines;
- Interpreting library procedures and operational manuals;
- Directing and instructing Library Aides, trainees, and volunteers;
- Performing office support work, including typing and filing; and
- Operating standard office equipment, including a typewriter, photocopier, fax, word processor and/or computer equipment.
Applicants who qualify in terms of relevant work experience and education, that best fit the needs of the City, will be invited to participate in the examination process. The examination process may include a written examination weighted 100%. However, the City reserves the right to utilize alternative testing methods if deemed necessary. Candidates must receive a minimum passing score of 70%, as determined by the relative performance of all candidates in all portions of the examination. In the event of identical ratings, candidates' names will be arranged in order of application date/time, and, if the same, then arranged alphabetically.
