The Nursing Assistant duties include, but not limited to the following:
Functions as a member of the Nursing Team and assists the Registered Nurse in the care of Veterans with Acute Mental Health needs, including observing, recording, and reporting changes in their behavior, and pro! viding reassurance and encouragement.
Work with multidisciplin! ary staff to achieve treatment goals for patients by providing input and feedback concerning the effectiveness of interventions.
Provides a full range of nursing care to patients with a variety of physical and/or behavioral problems including personal nursing care, diagnostic support duties and treatment procedures; appropriately responds to patient needs and reports changes in patient condition to RN
Performs support duties using initiative and without specific direction such as taking vital signs, recording and reporting deviations to the supervisor; collects specimens and labels for laboratory.
Participates in admissions, transfers, escorting residents to appointments and therapies, discharges and contributing to the nurse's formulation of nursing actions.
Assists in providing information to patients and participates in recovery oriented unit programming including topics such as social skills training, music group, exercise/walking gro! up, therapeutic recreation group, and ADL skills group.
Records subjective and objective and significant information about the patient's behavior in relation to the treatment plan and patient's response to care given on the patient's clinical record.
Recognizes and respond appropriately to medical and psychiatric emergency situations.
Participates in the use of Restraint and Seclusion (R/S), including proper use of and application of R/S; 1:1 observation and documentation on the behavioral R/S flow sheet; release from R/S and QM R/S monitor/ review.
Participates in the Prevention and Management of Disruptive Behavior; uses principles to prevent or respond to psychiatric emergencies; participates in Code Green Team responses and assists with proper documentation of the intervention.
Provides intensive observation, including 1:1 observation and Continuous Nursing Observation and complies with procedure to ensure patient safe! ty.
Conducts and documents unit safety rounds/ environmental r! ounds per procedure as assigned with an understanding of the importance of monitoring the environment on a continuous basis and reporting all actual or potential hazards per policy.
Verifies and understands the proper procedures for the cleaning of reusable medical equipment utilized in the assigned area. · Maintains cleanliness of the unit and ensures that the resident/patient care areas are stocked with needed supplies.
Maintains positive relationships with patients, visitors, and personnel. Answers telephones and call lights. Receives and directs patients and/or their families by answering routine questions.
Participates in ward in-service programs and assists in the orientation of new employees to the nursing unit.
Additional duties as assigned.
Work Schedule : Monday-Friday 7:30am-4:00pm OR 3:30pm-11:00pm

Basic Requirements:

Specialized Experience:
Applicants must have One year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the next lower grade (GS-4) in the normal line of progression for the occupation in the organization. Examples of specialized experience would typically include, but are not limited to:
Providing personal nursing care such as providing pre- and post-operative care.
Support duties for diagnostic and technical treatment procedures, such as setting up and operating special medical equipment and apparatus.
Caring for mentally ill patients, including observing, recording, and r! eporting changes in their behavior, and providing reassurance and encou! ragement..
Assisting surgeons and registered nurses in operating room activities, including passing instruments, maintaining sterile conditions, and draping and positioning patients.

Applicants may substitute education for the experience required for the GS-5 level. You must have completed a 4-year course of study above the high school level leading to a bachelorÂ's degree with courses related to the occupation. You will be rated on the following Knowledge, Skills, Abilities and Other characteristics (KSAOs) based on your application for this position.
1-Ability to communicate orally and in writing with a variety of people such as Physicians, Nurses, Patients.
2-Knowledge of basic psychiatric and medical terminology.
3-Ability to perform a variety of direct patient care activities and provide nursing care for specific patient conditions such as psychosis, neurosis, and sociopathy.
4-Ability to organize and priorit! ize work assignments to respond to emergency situations, staffing needs and complexity of patient population.

SUBSTITUTION OF EXPERIENCE FOR EDUCATION : 4-year course of study above high school leading to a bachelor's degree with courses related to the occupation, if required . This education must have been obtained in an accredited business or technical school, junior college, college or university for which high school graduation or the equivalent is the normal prerequisite. One year of full-time undergraduate study is defined as 30 semester hours, 45 quarter hours, or the equivalent in a college or university or at least 20 hours of classroom instruction per week for approximately 36 weeks in a business or technical school.
At the GS-5 Level, only education in excess of the first 60 semester hours of a course of study leading t! o a bachelor's degree is creditable toward meeting the specialized experience requirements. Two full academic years of study, or 60 semester hours, beyond the second year is equivalent to l year of specialized experience. Determine the applicant's total qualifying experience as a percentage of the year of specialized experience required at the GS-5 level. Then determine the applicant's education as a percentage of the education that meets the requirements for GS-5. Add the two percentages. The total percentage must equal at least 100 percent to qualify an applicant for GS-5.
