The Department of Rehabilitation Medicine was established in 1957. Our mission is to improve the function, level of independence, and quality of life of persons who have disabilities brought about by illness, injury, or of congenital origin. The Department fulfills this mission by providing regional and national leadership in patient care, education, research, and through its academic and clinical faculties, who represent a broad spectrum of scientific and clinical disciplines. The Department operates comprehensive rehabilitation services at five hospitals: University of Washington Medical Center (UWMC), Harborview Medical Center (HMC), Veterans Administration Puget Sound Health ! Care System (VAPSHCS), Children's Hospital & Regional Medical ! Center (CHRMC), Overlake Hospital Medical Center (OHMC). Each hospital has multidisciplinary teams to provide both inpatient and outpatient services to persons with a wide range of disabling conditions.
The Department of Rehabilitation Medicine has an outstanding opportunity for a part time 50%FTE Research Scientist Engineer 3. This position will join a team of researchers studying the efficacy of a telephone-delivered cognitive behavioral treatment
(T-CBT) in Veterans with a history of traumatic brain injury (TBI) for the treatment of chronic pain in a randomized controlled trial (RCT) with 160 participants. T-CBT will be compared to a telephone-delivered pain psycho-educational active control condition (T-Ed). The T-CBT intervention builds on other efficacious CBT interventions for chronic pain in the general population but is novel in that it is conducted via telephone and adapted for Veterans with a history of TBI. In addition to evaluating the effects! of the T-CBT intervention on pain intensity, this study will also determine its effects on other important domains often affected by or co-occurring with pain, including pain interference with other activities, sleep problems, depression, global impression of change, and life satisfaction.
Responsibilities include:
- Developing procedures for implementing research study protocols, including procedures for intervention implementation, contributing to research design methodology, and development of interventions and treatment fidelity protocols and manuals.
- Providing conceptual input regarding the pain interventions and their delivery via telephone.
- Consulting on therapist datasets for the implementation assessment, including therapist fidelity.
- Delivery of study interventions to study participants
- Providing guidance to study staff and other study interventionists on the intervention implementation
- Direc! ting and participating in analysis and writing teams in the preparation! of scholarly publications.
- Serving as an author on manuscripts as appropriate.
- Present project findings to professional and lay communities, scientific conferences, and publics forums as required.
- Preparing project reports for principal investigators and sponsor.
- Providing input on organizational efficiency; mentor and train staff in development of technical skills.
- Performing other related duties as required.
Requirements:
- Ph.D. degree in psychology, social work, psychiatry, public health or related field.
- *Background and experience in research on chronic pain treatment, telehealth, and disability
- *Work experience in a programming environment including design and documentation, experience with database systems, experience with statistical software packages (SPSS).
- *Strong writing skills and a dem! onstrated ability to write for publication in peer-reviewed scientific journals.
- *Training and/or knowledge in ethical conduct of research with human subjects.
