Public Health seeks a Psychiatrist to join the Psych Services team treating incarcerated persons in the King County Correctional Facility; most of the work is in the downtown facility but may also include work in the Kent facility. We have a strong community mental health focus and work closely with our medical colleagues in the jail.
The responsibilities of the Jail Psychiatrist include providing direct clinical care to patients incarcerated at the King County Correctional Facility, consultation to public health and correctional staff, working to connect patients to appropriate out-patient treatment, and management of Jail Health Services' psychiatric program.

WORK SCHEDULE: This position is FLSA Exempt and therefore not eligible for overtime. The work schedule may vary, including weekend shifts.
WORK LOCATION: King County Correctional Facility in Seattle (primary) and Maleng Regional Justice Center in Kent.

Examples of Duties:
Provide psychiatric oversight, consultation, direct client care and management of specialized health care programs within King County correctional settings.
Provide general psychiatry and psychopharmacologic management services to the inmates of the King County Correctional Facilities in the special psychiatric housing areas as well as the general population areas.
Assist the Medical Director of Psychiatric Services in oversight and quality assurance for psychiatry services to inmate populations.
Provide clinical backup to Psychiatric Advanced Registered Nurse Practitioners, Registered Nurses, and Psychiatric Evaluation Specialists.
When appropriate, assist with the civil commitment process for inmates who meet criteria for detention and/or submit affidavits for compelled psychiatric medication.
Provide consultative assistance to medical providers.
Provide care to inmates in psychiatric emergencies, including necessary support to maintain life and stabilize their medical condition.
Examine, diagnose, treat and refer clients to appropriate agencies or facilities.
Review clinical standards and develop psychiatric treatment guidelines.
Work with others within the program to assure compliance with NCCHC (National Commission on Correctional Health Care) standards and subsequent accreditation.
Participate as a clinical on-call resource on a rotating basis with other clinical staff.
Qualifications:
Graduation from an approved medical school. Completed residency in Psychiatry and at least 2 years of experience delivering psychiatric care in a community or inpatient setting.
Working knowledge in the practice of psychiatry and mental health.
Working knowledge of the procedures and techniques utilized in psychiatric medicine, in concurrence with American Psychiatric Association guidelines.
Demonstrated ability to apply knowledge of psychiatric practice to high risk populations, including offenders, homeless individuals, and other underserved populations.
Knowledge of substance abuse issues and their relationship/impact on psychiatric conditions.
Demonstrated ability to use current office software programs including word processing, spreadsheet, and email applications.
Skill in using electronic medical records.
Skill in communicating effectively with team members and inmates.
Skill in working with diverse populations.
Skill in testifying clearly and concisely at public hearings, courts of law, and at inquests in a professional, neutral, and convincing manner.
Skill in maintaining effective working relationships with medical and corrections staff, and inmates in a correctional facility setting.
Ability to make expert diagnoses, interpretations and recommendations on a consultative basis.
Licensing/ Certification Requirements:
Washington State medical license.
A National Provider Identification (NPI) must be obtained within the first 30 days of employment.
Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) registration must be obtained within 30 days of employment. Public Health can assist with acquiring DEA registration.
Board certification or eligibility to be board certified within 2 years is required.
Necessary Special Requirement:
Employees are required to complete accurate assessment, clinical diagnosis, and appropriate charting on the date of service.
Desired Qualification:
Correctional health experience preferred.

Public Health relies on office automation (Microsoft Office) and web-based enabled tools, therefore candidates must be proficient and comfortable with computer use to perform functions associated with on-going work.
Regular and reliable attendance, effective communication skills, and development of effective working relationships are requirements of all Public Health positions.
The person hired into this position will be required to adhere to the policies of the Department of Juvenile and Adult Detention (in addition to those of the Public Health Department) in meeting and maintaining the standards required for continued access to the facility as well as other standards related to conduct.
Staff may be required to play an active role in the event of a public health emergency, which may include changes in responsibilities and working hours.
